Application
Arbutin used in cosmetic industry whitening ingredients :
Arbutin protect the skin against damage caused by free radicals, Arbutin is a skin whitening agent which is very popular in Japan and Asian countries for skin de-pigmentation, Arbutin inhibits the formation of melanin pigment by inhibiting Tyrosinase activity.
Arbutin is a very safe skin agent for external use which does not have toxicity, stimulation, unpleasant odor or side effect such as Hydroquinone.
Introduction
Arbutin is a naturally occurring compound found in many plant sources such as bearberry, mulberry, and pomegranate.
Alpha arbutin is the eplmer of β-arbutin, which is a powerful face whitening cream that works to brightening skin, Alpha arbutin is regarded one of the most effective skin-lightening and spot-fading actives out there.
Benefits From Alpha Arbutin
Alpha arbutin effectively lightens and reduces UV induced pigmentation and free radicals, without increasing sun sensitivity. It fades discoloration caused by inflammation and environmental stressors while evening skin tone. It also addresses glycation, sugar-induced skin sallowness and loss of elasticity.
Controls melanin pigmentation
Fights free radical damage
Has antioxidant
Mechanism of Action
Alpha-arbutin works by slowly releasing hydroquinone over time, inhibiting tyrosinase, the key enzyme responsible for the production of melanin, or pigment, in the skin. In other words, less tyrosinase means less pigment, which means less discoloration and fewer unwanted dark spots.
Alpha arbutin is reversibly competing with tyrosine for a spot on the enzyme and not inhibiting cell viability, so therefore is not cytotoxic.
By targeting tyrosinase, the rate-limiting enzyme in melanin formation, as well as slowing production of the organelles that produce melanin, alpha arbutin is a potent skin brightening agent.
IN VIVO STUDY: SKIN-LIGHTENING EFFICACY
A skin-lightening study on 80 Chinese descent women demonstrated that an emulsion containing 1% Alpha-Arbutin resulted in a faster and more pronounced skin lightening effect after 1 month when compared with other commonly used single components at 1 % use levels.
IN VIVO STUDY: LIVER SPOTS EFFICACY
In a 3 month study1 on 26 female volunteers 2% Alpha-Arbutin in a cream formulation minimizes liver spots more efficiently than Beta-Arbutin.
The figure below shows satisfaction quotients relating to the evaluation of the liver spot reduction.
