Description

Macleaya cordata (Willd.) R. Br. is a perennial upright herbaceous plant of the Poppy family and the genus Macleaya, with a creamy yellow sap at the base. The stem is smooth green, up to 4 meters high, with a lot of white powder, and the leaves are broadly ovate or nearly round, with acute, acuminate, obtuse or rounded tips, semicircular, square, angular or other lobes, wavy, notched edges, green on the surface, white powder on the back, and reticular veins, often light red; large panicles with many flowers, terminal and axillary; bracts narrowly lanceolate. The flower buds are rod-shaped, nearly white, and the sepals are obovate-oblong, boat-shaped, and yellow-white; the filaments are filamentous, and the anthers are strip-shaped, the same length as the filaments; the ovary is obovate to narrowly obovate, and the capsule is narrowly obovate or oblanceolate, glabrous. The seeds are ovoid, with narrow caruncle. This product is the whole herb with roots of the Poppy family plant Macleaya cordata.

The main chemical components of Macleaya are alkaloids, from which sanguinarine, chelerythrine, protopine, α-allocryptopine and β-allocrytopine are obtained. The effective chemical components in Macleaya are mainly sanguinarine and chelerythrine, with the highest content in the fruit.
