Description
Epimedium brevicornu Maxim. is a perennial herb with a plant height of 20-60 cm. The rhizome is thick and short, dark brown, and the leaves are basal and stem-borne. They are long-stalked, and the leaflets are papery or thickly papery. The leaf margins have thorns. The flowers are white or light yellow. The flowering period is May-June, and the fruiting period is June-August.
Epimedium grows under the forest, in the bushes beside the ditch, or in the shade and wet places on the hillside, at an altitude of 650-3500 meters. It is cultivated in Shaanxi, Gansu, Shanxi, Henan, Qinghai, Hubei, Sichuan and other regions in China.
The whole herb of Epimedium is used for medicinal purposes. It is mainly used to treat impotence and premature ejaculation, back pain and leg pain, numbness of the limbs, hemiplegia, neurasthenia, forgetfulness, tinnitus, dizziness and other symptoms. Modern research shows that Epimedium contains icariin, volatile oil, wax alcohol, phytosterols, tannins, vitamin E and other ingredients. It can stimulate sexual function and promote semen secretion in animals. It also has antihypertensive (causing peripheral vasodilation), hypoglycemic, diuretic, antitussive and expectorant effects, as well as vitamin E-like effects. Pharmacological experimental studies have shown that epimedium can increase cardiovascular blood flow, promote hematopoietic function, immune function and bone metabolism, and has anti-aging and anti-tumor effects.

Description
Epimedium, also known as barrenwort, bishop's hat, fairy wings, horny goat wed, or yin yang huo (Chinese: ), is a genus of flowering plants in the family Berberidaceae. The majority of the species are endemic to China, with smaller numbers elsewhere in Asia, and a few in the Mediterranean region.
Epimedium species are deciduous or evergreen hardy perennials. The majority have four-parted "spider-like" flowers in spring.
The species used as a dietary supplement is Epimedium grandiflorum. It contains icariin, which is a weak PDE5 inhibitor in vitro.

Icariin is one of the major flavonoids of the herb Epimedium, which has long been used in Tranditional Chinese Medicine to treat bone fracture and prevent osteoporosis.
